I'm starting to realize that trying to see beauty within yourself is more complex than it should be because you have to understand what beauty is. What constructs beauty? How do we perceive beauty? What is the fine line between beauty and ugliness?
Well beauty is constructed of several things. Beauty is your outward appearance. Beauty is how you maintain composure in times of stress. Beauty is dreaming out loud. Beauty is how you treat other. Beauty is letting people see your pain. The thing that is most beautiful though, is knowing that no matter what you possess everything you need inside of you to be the best you that you can be.
I take issue with how the media portrays beauty because it has soured the way my generation defines beauty. I know that I may be picking at the miniscule aspects by what it means to be beautiful, but what makes a person appealing to the eye and heart cannot be contained to a list of physical attributes. A small waist alone is not beautiful. A set of chiseled abs alone is not beautiful. And the color of your skin tone does not make you any less or more beautiful than the next person. With so many #WCW and #MCM on Instagram how would anyone be able to differentiate that.
I know too many girls who starve themselves because guys only see a certain body type as desirable. And though it's hard to believe that guys suffer from self image issues as well... I know too many guys willing to workout all day and look like a deformed alien just to please the opposite sex. Beauty isn't skin deep and learning that will help you find the beauty within yourself.
I've dealt with my own self image issues and I know most girls my age have, but that's because beauty is a hard concept to grasp. Just like love can't be defined... neither can beauty. You have to give these things your own definition and make them fit you. You are most beautiful when you embody everything that makes you... you.
